ADDRESS TO CONFERENCE 2019

"The Retired Prison Governors Association [RPGA] chairman Graham Smith addressed and thanked the PGA President Andrea Albutt and conference chairman for again facilitating our committee meeting and our AGM at their annual conference as it gives us the opportunity to meet potential members before they retire which is crucial to the future of our Association. He noted that some delegates looked like   .......

RPGA AGM Report

On the 161h October 2012 I was pleased to chair both the RPGA 6 monthly committee meeting and the AGM at PSC Newbold Revel.

Most of our members will have known the college as the venue for many HMPS meetings, functions and events such as the Sports day and Dog Trails. Our meetings took place in the ....

Autumn 2014
Not a bad summer so far [August] with Yorkshire at the top of the league, hopefully poised to win it, and some cricket still to come.

The AGM and reunion in June seem like a distant event now but I want to comment as it is the main focus of what we are about these days. We had another few new faces including Chris Duffin and Florence Herbert at their first reunion and as is always the case the former triggered many memories of when ....

Autumn 2018

Well another summer gone and hasn’t it been a good one for us retirees to enjoy? I hope you are all well and enjoyed some sun. I have seen a lot of cricket at Yorkshire [not a good sea son for us] and had a tiw trips around the country. Notice I don’t use the “holiday” word, as I don’t think as a retirred person you can technically be on holiday one big holiday hey?

Welcome to this edition of the ....

Spring 2018

I write with a view from my window of the Pennines and snow falling, although light, is persistent and with a forecast of -8 degrees tonight it will be a good idea to be by the fire and relax in the warmth of our winter fuel allowance - lovely! Not to be though as tonight is choir practice and with a big concert looming headlined by no other than Lesley Garratt on the 10th March it’s crucial that we get it right on the night. Unfortunately it will have come and gone by the time you read this.......

Autumn 2017

I chaired the Retired Prison Governors Association AGM held in Hinckley on the 14th June 2017 and it was pleasing to see a number of new faces including Gordon Tweedie, Don Webb, Terry Bone and Roger Outram. There were also 14 apologies. The meeting benefitted from an update on PGA NEC current issues from Dave Hoskins and Kevin Billson along with Don Makepeace from the Civil Servants Pensioners Alliance (CSPA) who came to support the possible formal link ....

Autumn 2019

For the second successive year, PGA conference was held at the Radisson Bleu Hotel close to East Midlands Airport. It was no surprise that the NEC chose to return here after the much-improved attendance in 2015 when compared to Buxton. Conference also continued with the new two-day format, which, as I reported last year, actually only results in a reduction of 90 minutes of business time. Again guest speakers were  .......

Spring 2019

Welcome to this edition of the RPGA Newsletter. I hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year and are looking forward to another year of trips and adventures. It is 10 years at the end of March since I retired and I have to say it has been an excellent experience so here is to another 10 years: bring it on!
I was reflecting today *23rd February 2019+ that it is 50 years ago exactly that I joined the “Modern Prison Service”. I remember the date as it is .....

Spring 2020

We are I suspect all in shock at the world changing events of the last few weeks and the impact that a microscopic virus has had on what we have taken for granted, our way of life. As the risk is higher with our age group it is crucial that we bite the bullet and do what we can as individuals, as families and as friends rally round at this time albeit 2 metres apart. I write this just as the Prime Minister announces a 12....

40th Anniversary Edition 2020

Dear members, will life ever be the same again? The past few months have been a testing time for us all whether you are a retired Governor or in an operational setting which I’m sure we all appreciate has challenged even HMPPS staff daily. Key workers indeed! In incident training we used to try to define “When is an incident over?” this incident may take some time yet. I hope you are all as safe and well as you can be  .......

Well, we seem to have the dreaded virus in a holding pattern and yes we thought it was the light at the end of the tunnel but blow me if it wasn’t another train coming towards us with so many carriages labelled NHS,.........

Spring 2023

Welcome to this spring edition of the RPGA newsletter edited by Paul Laxton in his usual professional way. Items always welcome from you.
I just reviewed my comments in the last edition reference strikes, NHS, airport delays etc. and things have not improved in fact it is much worse so goodness knows where we will be in the next 6 months. Hope it is not spoiling your retirement plans too much. I don’t comment on the politics of it all..........

Hello and welcome to the autumn edition of the RPGA newsletter edited and produced by Paul Laxton, our thanks to Paul as ever. It does not seem that long since the Spring edition. Your contributions always welcome.

I write this mid-September and you will want to know the weather up here on the Pennines is wet and windy a typical day in these parts. Still the cricket was good this year *we was robbed at Old Trafford+ and Huddersfield Town have hit the ground running. ...

Spring 2024

Hello and welcome to the RPGA Spring Newsletter and our thanks to Paul Laxton our editor and to those who have made a contribution- always welcome. I particularly enjoyed the “Over the Wall “article by Peter Atkinson in the last edition.

I write this on the 1st of March, the first day of meteorological spring and yes it is snowing on the Pennines and a tad chilly, but bearable.
